WASHINGTON, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Democratic U.S. Representative Elissa Slotkin of Michigan on Monday said she will run for the Senate seat being left open by Debbie Stabenow in 2024. Stabenow, 72, a Democrat serving a fourth term in the U.S. Senate, said in January she would not seek re-election. Keeping the seat in Democrats' hands could be vital for the party to maintain control of the Senate in 2025. No widely known Republicans have entered the race for Stabenow's seat so far. Michigan Republicans earlier in February selected Trump loyalist Kristina Karamo to be their next state chair, elevating an election denier as far-right members gain clout in the battleground state.

"The election baggage is going to make it hard to move the party forward," said John Clark, a professor of political science at Western Michigan University. "We cannot wait to get work done as one Michigan Republican Party," said Karamo, a local Republican activist who ran an unsuccessful campaign for secretary of state in 2022. The state party chair's main responsibilities include guiding the party's messaging and raising millions of dollars to help fund mass mailing campaigns and support candidates. She has yet to concede he loss to Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who won November's election by 14 points.
Two 2020 election deniers are the top candidates to lead the Michigan GOP headed into 2024. The state party on Saturday will decide on a leader to replace outgoing chair Ron Weiser. "What's going on in Michigan is a microcosm of what is going on with the Republican Party nationally," said Michael Traugott, a professor at the Center for Political Studies at the University of Michigan. The judge declined to intervene, leaving it up to Michigan Republican Party officials to set the rules on delegate selection. The top two candidates for state party chair have both promoted conspiracy theories in support of Trump's false claims about voter fraud. "There's some people that are thinking this is the end of the Republican Party," he said.
Many MAGA Republicans are wishing for Trump's "mortal demise," a former GOP Rep. says. Peter Meijer told The Atlantic he has heard MAGA Republicans say: "I can't wait until this guy dies." Other Republicans told The Atlantic they think Trump's diet and age might hasten his death. Meijer did not say which Republicans told him they wished Trump was dead. "I thought it was kind of a morbid, dark joke at first," Coppins told CNN.
“We spoke with a clear voice in November,” Whitmer said in her annual State of the State speech, which she delivered in person for the first time since the beginning of the Covid pandemic. Whitmer, who was on President Joe Biden’s shortlist for vice president, is seen as a rising national star. “I know we might have different perspectives here, but I sure hope we can all get around supporting 4-year-olds across Michigan,” she said. “But the truth is that she set a record during her first term for vetoing bills, many which Republicans and Democrats worked together to pass.”In several policy areas, Whitmer spoke more defiantly or struck more partisan tones. I’m looking at you, Ohio and Indiana.”Those remarks drew a rebuke on social media from the Michigan Republican Party, which during the speech tweeted: “No.

Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow, a member of the Democratic leadership, announced Thursday that she will not run for a fifth term in 2024, opening up a seat in the key battleground state. The announcement is expected to make Michigan's 2024 Senate race one of the most competitive in the country. Only one Michigan Republican has held a seat in the Senate in the past 40 years. If the full DNC approves the plan, as expected, Michigan would be the fifth state to vote in the primary process on Feb. 27. The Republican National Committee has already set their primary schedule and Michigan is not in the first five states.
WASHINGTON — If it’s Monday ... It’s the last day of campaigning before tomorrow’s Georgia Senate runoff. ... NBC’s Vaughn Hillyard covers the closing messages by Democrat Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker. And just looking at the campaigns, which get the biggest bang per advertising buck, it’s Warnock at $25.2 million, versus Walker at $10.1 million. But now it’s $11.8 million — behind Warnock’s $25 million and the $20.3 million from Georgia Honor, a Democratic Super PAC. “Personalities come and go,” said Dave Ball, the GOP chair in Pennsylvania’s Washington County, who has supported and defended Trump. Trump is preparing to do just that, with a Tuesday announcement expected at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. In Illinois, Republicans had threatened to take two state Supreme Court seats and flip state Senate and House seats. In Pennsylvania, GOP leaders had hoped to at least hold on to the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Pat Toomey. Trump lost the state by narrow margins in 2016 and 2020.
Republican candidate Kari Lake’s campaign began casting doubts on the election results as her Democratic opponent, Katie Hobbs, took the lead. On Tuesday night, while addressing supporters at her election headquarters, Lake said, “It’s like Groundhog Day“ — a reference to the 2020 election. Notably, GOP candidates such as Pennsylvania’s Doug Mastriano have yet to make concession speeches. For what it’s worth, election deniers who lost should follow the lead of Michigan Republican gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon who finally conceded to Gov. Indeed, even more than who makes it to Congress, what should concern us is the fact that election deniers won races for governor, attorney general and secretary of state.
Michigan GOP gubernatorial hopeful Tudor Dixon is running to unseat incumbent Gov. Dixon's running mate, Shane Hernandez, is a former Michigan state representative. Jazmine Early, a Macomb County resident who said she's been involved in local politics for more than a decade, called the first-time candidate vying to unseat incumbent Democratic Gov. Warren Rojas/InsiderKatrina Whetsel, a Macomb County resident and local GOP official, agreed wholeheartedly with Early. Laura Davidson, a Kent County resident, said she was sure Dixon was in good company.

"When I'm attorney general: No more lockdowns! DePerno also brought up crime, fentanyl, defunding the police, and parental rights — but didn't say a word about election integrity.

Michigan voters may be about to approve an abortion law that would be among the most permissive in the country. If they do, the reason will be a combination of proponents’ dishonesty and opponents’ negligence. The end of Roe v. Wade has yet to change anything in the Wolverine State. A 1931 law, still on the books but unenforceable under Roe, prohibited abortion except to save the life of the mother. Two courts granted their petitions for an injunction against enforcing the law, and a state judge struck down the law in September.
Dixon said that the incumbent governor's "dream for women" is to have "single women working." Gretchen Whitmer of not providing support for families in the state, arguing that the governor favored "single working women" who have "a pretty lonely life." Single women working. Single women working. I think that's pretty twisted," Dixon told the newspaper.
There is no evidence that any school has deployed litter boxes for students to use because they identify as cats. The rumor of litter boxes in schools appears to have begun among parents on social media, and one of the first schools to confront the falsehood was in Canada last fall. Catalina Lauf, a Republican congressional nominee in Illinois, tweeted this month that schoolchildren were using litter boxes in her state. Some say litter boxes are located in “transgender bathrooms” in schools. Meanwhile on TikTok, one video claiming “kids are now requesting litter boxes at school” collected 3 million views on the platform.
Over two dozen corporate leaders and businesses are quietly donating to the campaigns of at least four Republicans who have pushed false claims about the 2020 election results while running to become secretaries of state, according to a review of state campaign finance disclosures. Marchant is running to be Nevada's secretary of state, while Finchem and Karamo are aiming for the same position in Arizona and Michigan, respectively. The allegations led to dozens of failed lawsuits attempting to overturn state results and prompted the deadly Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Those business officials started financing the secretary of state candidates in Aug. 2021 and continued their donations through September, according to state records. Beckel noted in an email to CNBC that donors could be giving to secretary of state candidates for future help with issues more directly tied to their businesses.
Michigan GOP gubernatorial nominee Tudor Dixon mocked the kidnapping plot against Gov. "Gretchen Whitmer sure is good at taking business hostage and holding it for ransom," Dixon said. Two men were convicted in the plot, in which they sought to kidnap Whitmer from her vacation home. Insider contacted Dixon's campaign office for comment, but didn't immediately receive a reply Saturday. "Tudor Dixon's comments are dangerous, an insult to law enforcement who keep us safe, and utterly disqualifying for the role of Michigan governor," he said.
